Out of the Winter Doldrums

I’ve done so little photography this past winter, with the exception of documenting a few local protests. I welcome the warmer weather, when I’ll want to get out more, head north and add to my Going Mobile and Abandoned Places series’.

I have some photographer friends who can’t believe I spend so much time shooting with my iPhone. It’s always with me, so why not? I also find that I see differently with my phone than I do with my Nikon. Much like my Holga, I don’t have to think much about settings, other than changing the format from 4x3 to 1x1. When I was shooting film, I used several square format cameras; a Mamiya, a Rolleiflex, and eventually a Diana and my trusty, light-leak prone Holga. Always a surprise with both the Diana and Holga!

When I’m using my iPhone I can also move around a subject, finding different angles and not thinking about the technical part of shooting. I just see and shoot. I love that.
